I recently purchased a new camera (Canon EOS 5DSR) and a wide angle lens. The latter was a replacement for a favorite lens that literally popped off my camera body and fell 50 feet into the canyon, probably indicating that I was both a bit too close to the edge, and hadn’t dutifully locked it onto the camera body.
When I received my new gear I was anticipating a long wait until the next reliable weather events in mid-summer. I have been thankfully wrong in anticipating a typical spring with blue skies and little cloud play.
April and early May have been astounding for making great images. I enjoyed a particularly glorious morning shoot at Yaki Point recently. A hail producing storm cell swept over my position on the rim, nearly sending me back to my car, and home for a cup of hot coffee.
I’m glad I stuck it out as the resulting images were replete with towering clouds, a pinwheel of sun rays, and dramatic spotlight on the canyon’s signature peaks. With any luck, these spring storms will last right up to the monsoon season in early July.
